Planning a wedding is personal, but for expats in NL, it often feels like a logistical maze of paperwork. After years of handling the heavy lifting for international couples, I’ve distilled the process. My shift to Wedding Consulting allows me to give you a strategic overview of these legal requirements so you don’t get stuck in the red tape.

The Essential Dutch Bureaucracy Steps:

Step 1: Check Your Residency Status. You (or your partner) must reside in NL and be registered at a Dutch address to start the process.

Step 2: Collect Foreign Documents (The ‘Hard’ Part). This is where couples get stuck! You will need original, often legalized (Apostille stamp), translated birth certificates and statements of single status from your home country. This can take months.

Step 3: The Notice of Intent (‘Melding Voorgenomen Huwelijk’). Formerly Ondertrouw, this must be filed with the municipality (Gemeente) at least 14 days before your desired date.

Step 4: The ‘BABS’ (Registrar) Selection. You can request a municipality registrar, but I advise expats to hire a specialist bilingual registrar (please contact me for the top BABS of The Netherlands who speak the language and can create a very special, personal ceremony for you and your special guests.

A bilingual registrar doesn’t just translate words — they connect hearts. By speaking to you and your guests in more than one language, your ceremony becomes truly personal, inclusive, and unforgettable.
